Just like our listeners, we love Halloween here at WMPH.
We've been out in the field doing research for you this year!
We're going to bring you the best haunted attractions for the
year!
We're going to be visiting all the best attractions this year,
and we'll bring you the reports as our staff visited each one. |

Field of
Screams, Lancaster, PA |
Our
first visit was to
Field of
Screams. Field of Screams is a family owned attraction
in the Lancaster area. It offers two amazing haunted
houses, a very strong hayride, and a number of other
attractions. Field of Screams is intentionally
family-friendly, and offers programs for the young children in
addition to the more terrifying offerings.Field of Screams is
open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until Halloween.
For those adventurous souls, it's also open Halloween Night. |

Field of Screams is located just off Route 30 (the Mountville
exit). Prices start as $12 for the hayride, and $23 for
all attractions. Parking is free, easy, and plentiful.
Field of Screams boasts two haunted houses. Both of
they are terrifying. These haunted houses are serious
business. They are jam-packed with terrifying actors,
effects, and surprises.
The Den of Darkness is a haunted hotel whose guests are just
dying to meet you. Be careful, it's much easier to check
in than to check out.

Bates
Motel, Glen Mills, PA |
Our
second visit was to the
Bates
Motel. The Bates Motel is one of the closest
attractions, located in Glen Mills, PA. It's also the #3
best haunted house in the nation, as rated by Haunt World
Magazine. The Bates Motel offers three major attractions:
the Bates Motel, the Haunted Hayride, and the Haunted Corn Maze.
It's family owned and operated, and features a cast of over 45
actors. |

The Bates Motel is a simply amazing haunt. It houses some
of the best and scariest scenes that we've ever seen. It's
national ranking is well deserved.
The motel contains lots of actors and some amazing animatronics.
From the butcher to the catacombs, it's a terrifying experience.

Additionally, the Haunted Hayride is a spectacular fright-fest.
It features many different scenes, and it takes over 25 minutes
to experience the whole trip. The Haunted Hayride has many
elaborate scenes, including the amazing dragon castle. |

The Bates Motel is one of the best haunts that we're ever seen.
It's also one of the closest in terms of distance. For
reference, it's about 30 minutes from Wilmington.
Parking is free, plentiful, and convenient. Prices start
at $12 for the Bates Motel, $15 for the Haunted Hayride, or $30
for all three attractions. |

Jason's
Woods, Lancaster, PA |
Our
third visit was to
Jason's
Woods. Jason's Woods is also located in the Lancaster
area, to the north and west of Wilmington. Jason's Woods
is a family owned and operated attraction, and features several
different attractions with its borders. Jason's Woods
includes the Horrifying Hayride, the Barn of Terror, the Mystery
Maze, Pirate's Revenge, the Macabre Museum, Pitch Black, and the
Psycho Circus. |

The first stop at Jason's Woods is the Macabre Museum. The
museum is an interesting collection of horror memorabilia, such
as the original Freddy Kreuger glove and a restore 1890's
horse-drawn hearse.
The main attractions are the Horrifying Hayride and the Barn of
Terror. The hayride is a lengthy and well-choreographed
hayride consisting of several scenes. The finale is
exceptional.
The Barn of Terror is a multi-level haunted house, full of
actors and terrifying effects. It's very well done, and
well worth the trip. It features residents such as Dr.
Shock and Sick Santa. It's a very scary haunted house, and
isn't recommended for small children.
Additionally, Jason's Woods has four other themed attractions:
Pirate's Revenge, the Psycho Circus, Pitch Black, and the
Mystery Maze. Pirate's Revenge and Pitch Black are both
brand-new for the 2007 season. |

Jason's Woods is located near the intersection of routes 741 +
324. I warn you, print the directions on their website
before getting in the car.
Prices start as $12 for the hayride, $10 for the Barn of Terror,
and $25 for all attractions. Parking is free, easy, and plentiful. |

Frightland, Middletown, DE |

Our next stop on the Haunted House Roundup was
Frightland,
located in Middletown Delaware.
Frightland is located on Route 13, south of Wilmington and north
of Smyrna. It's really quite huge, and offers eight
different attractions.
The main attractions are the Barn of Horror, Idalia Manor, and
the Haunted Hayride. Additionally, Frightland offers
several other attractions, such as The Attic, The Escape, the
Town of Redemption, the Forgotten Asylum, and the Haunted Woods. |

The Barn of Horror and Idalia Manor are strong haunted
attractions, and are well done. We particularly liked the
surprise ending. Additionally, the Haunted Hayride has a number
of very good scenes, and has a generous running time.
We were impressed with the Town of Redemption. This
western-themed horror attraction is one of the best ideas we've
seen. It's a lot of fun, and it's pretty scary as well.
Frightland is family-friendly, as it offers several different
attractions for families with young children.
Additionally, the various haunts are more toned-down that some
of the other haunted attractions in the area. They aren't as
outright terrifying, and would be well-suited to families who
are bringing their children along for the fun. |

Prices start at $20 for admission to the limited attractions and
$25 for access to everything. Parking is plentiful, but
not free. Parking costs $2, with the proceeds going to charity.
Additionally, be careful what you bring with you.
Backpacks are not permitted. Security at the gate is very
tight. |

Scare
World, Wilmington, DE |
We
also visited
Scare World,
right here in Wilmington, DE. Scare World is located at
the Tri-State Mall, at the intersection of I-95 and Naaman's Rd.
Scare World offers seven different haunted houses, each with a
different theme. They range from ancient Egypt to a
modern-day cell block. The largest and most featured
attraction is 13 Floors, which includes a unique elevator
thrill. 13 Floors is much larger than the other haunted
houses, and in our opinion, was the best of the seven. |

The Dungeon of Darkness is the "classic" haunted house at Scare
World. It features a dark maze and a haunted graveyard.
Cellblock D is a haunted, fog-filled maze, set in a modern-day
prison.
The Tomb of King Tut is an Egyptian-themed haunt that features
mummies and the horrors of ancient crypts.
The Mansion takes you through a gloomy manor, where the pictures
watch your every move, and danger waits just around the corner.
The Toxic Freakshow is a classic 3D circus nightmare.
It features a spinning 3D tunnel sure to make you lose your
balance.
The Butcher Shop is a bloody tour through the workings of a
murderous slaughterhouse.
Finally, 13 Floors... 13 Floors is the largest of the
attractions, and offers an amazing transition in the middle of
the attraction. It features several different paths, and
offers a longer and more detailed excursion than any of the
other houses. |

Scare World is located near the Delaware-Pennsylvania state
line, at the Tri-State Mall. It's easily accessible from
I-95 (at the Naaman's Rd exit).
Prices start as $18 for any single attraction, $25 for any five
attractions, or $30 for all attractions. Note: Only
the $30 option allows access to 13 Floors.
Security is very tight, and is very serious about preventing
anyone from bringing in any lighters due to the nature of the
attractions. Expect an inspection at the gate. |
